Hello,
How is everyone? Thanks for bearing with me while I had a much needed break.
I’m back and first up this week I’m talking about writing after finishing a long project like a book.
And because this update is for paid readers, I will also be talking a little bit about the next book I am currently in planning mode with.
Let’s get to it…
The writers of Twitter who have lived in the query trenches for a while advise writing another book to occupy yourself while waiting for responses from agents and as a way to get over the last book, a sort of hangover cure if you will.
I officially finished my last book in January and since have only written short form pieces. I’ll be honest, writing 90,000 words, doing round after round of edits, and multiple read throughs really takes it out of you and the idea of doing it all over again is quite daunting. You really do have to admire published authors for this who are contracted to one book a year. Or those Mills and Boon authors who write four/five books a year - it’s enough to make your eyes water, I tell you!
The first draft of my book was written entirely in the Pages app on my iPhone and about half the edits were made there too. I am a mother of two young kids and so finding time to write is difficult, coupling that with a breastfed baby meant that I only really had time to write when I was feeding or doing bedtimes. A phone is easy to hold and portable making it the most viable option for writing at the time because most people know that babies love smashing their hands on a keyboard. It was difficult then and now with a toddler in tow, I don’t know what finding time to write will look like or which device I will be able to write on. I wrote 90k words on a phone screen and at the risk of sounding slightly dramatic, the thought of doing it again makes me want to cry.
Still, I’m now four months post-completion and I think it’s time to get back behind the keyboard.
