Hello,
If you follow a lot of writers you will know it is novel writing month. I’ve joined the challenge this year after completing it in 2019 which feels like it was so so long ago, especially when you consider it was pre-pandemic and I’ve had another kiddo since then. Said extra kiddo has made this round a real challenge, we kicked off November 1st with a trip to the doctors for a chest infection, and if you have done novel writing month you’ll know those first few days are crucial. Hitting the ground running not only sets you up nicely to marathon the month but it also sets the the tone and your mindset.
Being behind meant I was constantly catching up and I had planned to keep an updated journal of sorts on here on my progress but that went out the window as soon as I found myself in a 5k deficit but slowly surely I wrote myself out of the hole and got myself to an even keel. This set me up for a sprint day on Saturday where I completed the minimum word count for the day and then an extra 5k.
While I have attempted to write this post about three times, I have actually written about 43,000 words of my novel, so I’m not mad about it. Not just because I have completely more than half of my book but because sometimes you just need to do the thing instead of talking about doing it. I’m only talking about it now I have some space to breathe but it’s not over yet.
I am now primed to finish before November 30th if I want to jog the last 7.2k or walk the 1.2k per day, I’d prefer to finish before the weekend and rest. My eyes have taken a battering, absorbing all the blue light from my screen when I haven’t been wearing my glasses. They don’t fit my face properly so they slide down whenever I look down which I do whenever I’m looking for words like they will land in my lap (and that’s a lot).
The next stop is to finish the whole first draft, hopefully by Christmas, then it can go away ready for fresh eyes in January. I want to talk a little bit about the novel I’ve been working on, a re-write of the novel I finished in 2022 and how the process has been quite different from how I usually write but also has seen me writing on my phone again, but that is for another post or two.
For now, I am heading back into Pages ready to cross that ribbon.
See you at 50k!
